Black Hills Academy
Black Hills Academy (BHA) is a specialized education program designed for students with emotional, behavioral, and educational challenges. Through structured support, individualized learning, and strong relationships, students build the skills they need to succeed in school—and in life.
A Place to Reset, Rebuild, and Succeed
Black Hills Academy (BHA) offers two program options to meet students where they are:
- A Residential School Program in partnership with Canyon Hills
- A Day Program for students in Northern Hills school districts
Two Program Options:
Residential School Program
The Residential School Program is located within Canyon Hills, a psychiatric residential treatment center operated in collaboration with Lutheran Social Services.
BHA provides the on-site educational services for students ages 10–17 who are receiving residential care. This integrated approach ensures students receive consistent academic instruction alongside therapeutic support.
Day Program
The BHA Day Program is an alternative educational setting designed for students who need more intensive behavioral and academic support during the school day.
Students attend daily and return home each afternoon, allowing them to stay connected to their families while receiving the structure and support they need.
Beginning Fall 2026, the Day Program will be located at the BH Education Connection building in Spearfish to better serve growing enrollment and expand opportunities for students.
